Last year the market also hosted late-opening festive sessions every Wednesday through December (excluding Christmas Day), perfect for a festive evening market wander. This year, visitors were also treated to a lantern procession, where children from five local schools paraded their handmade colourful lanterns around Greenwich and into the Market for the big Christmas Countdown and Lights On. The night the lights turned on, the air was filled with cheer, with an evening of live music, festive activities, and more, to enjoy alongside the ocular delight of a display. The night also marked the launch of the Belgravia Christmas trail – seeing festive displays hitting the windows of local establishments. Throughout the night of the lights turning on, the London Gay Men’s Chorus performed choral sets around Belgravia, while Father Christmas and two of his reindeer were also seen in the area. Moreover, the stars are comprised of 300,000 LED lightbulbs made from recycled polymer, which are 75% more efficient than standard lightbulbs. This year’s Christmas stars will shine for a slightly shorter period each day in a bid to cut their energy consumption in the midst of the UK’s cost of living crisis.
